What converting JPG to PNG does (and doesn’t do)
PNG is lossless, so once your image is a PNG you can edit and save it as often as you like without it getting worse. A JPG is compressed again every time it is saved, and its quality slowly wears down. That makes PNG a good working format for retouching, adding text or building designs.
Converting can’t restore detail the JPG has already lost, and it doesn’t make the background transparent: the PNG looks exactly like the JPG, pixel for pixel. To remove a background, open the PNG in an editing tool afterwards.
PNG files are much larger than JPGs, often 3–5 times or more for photos. Convert when a site or app specifically asks for PNG, such as some icon, sticker or print uploads; for everyday sharing, JPG remains the better fit.

Which format should I choose?
- JPG
- Opens on every phone, computer, and website. Pick this if you are not sure.
- PNG
- Lossless, so no quality is lost. File sizes are 3–5× larger than JPG.
- WebP
- Around 30% smaller than JPG at the same quality. Supported by all modern browsers.
- AVIF
- The smallest files, often half the size of JPG. Newer, so a few older apps cannot open it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a JPG file?
JPG (or JPEG) is the most common photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, and practically every device, app and website supports it.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your web browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device, and we never see them.
Is there a limit on how many photos I can convert?
No. Add as many as you like. Very large batches are processed a few at a time so your device does not run out of memory.
Does converting reduce quality?
At the default settings the difference is invisible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy, or raise the quality slider for JPG, WebP and AVIF.
What happens to photo metadata like location?
Converted images do not include the original metadata (EXIF), so GPS location, camera details and timestamps are removed. That makes them safer to share publicly.
Why is AVIF slower?
AVIF squeezes images much smaller, which takes more computation. Expect a few seconds per photo.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS.
