JPG to AVIF Converter
Get the smallest possible files from your photos. AVIF is often about half the size of a JPG with no visible difference, and all current browsers display it.
Why convert JPG to AVIF?
AVIF is the most efficient image format that browsers support. A JPG photo converted to AVIF is often around half its original size with no visible difference, which makes AVIF the strongest choice for image-heavy websites, portfolios and online shops.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display AVIF. On your own website you can serve AVIF with a JPG fallback using the HTML <picture> element, so visitors with older browsers still see an image.
AVIF encoding is demanding, so expect a few seconds per photo, more on phones and for very large images. Choosing a maximum size of 2048 px speeds it up considerably. AVIF’s quality scale doesn’t match JPG’s, and the default of 70% looks clean on photos.

Which format should I choose?
- JPG
- Opens on every phone, computer, and website. Pick this if you are not sure.
- PNG
- Lossless, so no quality is lost. File sizes are 3–5× larger than JPG.
- WebP
- Around 30% smaller than JPG at the same quality. Supported by all modern browsers.
- AVIF
- The smallest files, often half the size of JPG. Newer, so a few older apps cannot open it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a JPG file?
JPG (or JPEG) is the most common photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, and practically every device, app and website supports it.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your web browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device, and we never see them.
Is there a limit on how many photos I can convert?
No. Add as many as you like. Very large batches are processed a few at a time so your device does not run out of memory.
Does converting reduce quality?
At the default settings the difference is invisible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy, or raise the quality slider for JPG, WebP and AVIF.
What happens to photo metadata like location?
Converted images do not include the original metadata (EXIF), so GPS location, camera details and timestamps are removed. That makes them safer to share publicly.
Why is AVIF slower?
AVIF squeezes images much smaller, which takes more computation. Expect a few seconds per photo.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS.
