Why convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF is one of the newest image formats. More and more websites and image services use it because it produces very small files, so it is increasingly what you get when you save an image from a web page. Support outside the browser is still patchy, though: older versions of Windows, many photo editors and lots of upload forms can’t open AVIF files yet.
Converting to JPG trades some file size for compatibility. The JPG will often be around twice the size of the AVIF, but it opens everywhere, and at the default quality of 90% you won’t see any further loss.
The conversion uses your browser’s own AVIF decoder, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all include. If a file won’t convert, update your browser or try another one. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.

Which format should I choose?
- JPG
- Opens on every phone, computer, and website. Pick this if you are not sure.
- PNG
- Lossless, so no quality is lost. File sizes are 3–5× larger than JPG.
- WebP
- Around 30% smaller than JPG at the same quality. Supported by all modern browsers.
- AVIF
- The smallest files, often half the size of JPG. Newer, so a few older apps cannot open it.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. Its files are much smaller than JPG or WebP, so more and more websites use it, but many desktop apps and older systems still cannot open it.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your web browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device, and we never see them.
Is there a limit on how many photos I can convert?
No. Add as many as you like. Very large batches are processed a few at a time so your device does not run out of memory.
Does converting reduce quality?
At the default settings the difference is invisible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy, or raise the quality slider for JPG, WebP and AVIF.
What happens to photo metadata like location?
Converted images do not include the original metadata (EXIF), so GPS location, camera details and timestamps are removed. That makes them safer to share publicly.
Why is AVIF slower?
AVIF squeezes images much smaller, which takes more computation. Expect a few seconds per photo.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS.
